Southern California Home Sharing Program for Seniors – NBC Los Angeles

As a solution for those struggling with the high cost of housing, Southern California nonprofits have helped seniors living on a fixed budget remain independent, generating income through shared housing programs.

Affordable Living for Aging Renters offers affordable housing options for those in need, while fighting homeowners with potential tenants and providing an extra source of income for seniors.

The program, run with government grants and donations, offers matching services free of charge.

“When we place people, it’s a long-term fit,” Avi Kapur, program manager for affordable living for ageing, added that the program is completely free. “We’re really trying to make sure people are being vetted.”

There are two types of contracts for the Home Sharing Program. One is a rent-only option. The other is a service exchange option that allows tenants to provide help around the home.

Judy Halloran and Martha Almendales have been roommates since they were paired up in the shared housing program last summer.

After a series of back surgeries, Halloran needed extra help around the house, unless he tried to move with his family or think about enough money to move into assisted living.

However, after meeting Almendales through the home sharing program, Halloran was able to stay at the home where she lived, as Amendeles cooked and removed the trash in exchange for $750 rent.

“I went like $1,800 when I was looking at the studio, like $2,200 in a single bedroom,” recalled Armenderes, who said living with Halloran helped save enough money for the car. “I’m in a much better headspace where I live here and have my own space.”

Halloran also said the match had an impact on her life.

“I can stay in my comfort in my own home, I know what I am around, that just means the world to me,” Halloran said.

According to a 2024 National Generation Poll of Healthy Aging at the University of Michigan, 53% of older adults said they had experienced stress in terms of their personal finances over the past year. Polls found that over half of older people reported reducing at least one daily expense.

“The affordable price crisis is real,” Kapoor said. “If a tenant comes and uses an unused bedroom in your home or your apartment, it can be a house changer, not just because you have additional income and that relationship.”
