Prosecutors in Santa Ana’s courtroom told ju judges Tuesday that Michelle Gutierrez stabbed her husband on her birthday while sleeping in bed, and that her two children heard screams.
The horrifying scene reportedly took place in January 2021 at the couple’s Santa Ana’s home in the 1000 block of West Bishop Street at around 9:30am.
Police arrive and find the then 32-year-old woman outside the house with a serious knife wound on her chest, and she is rushed to the hospital.
Inside the house, officers at the Santa Ana Police Station discovered that her husband, 38-year-old Cesar Reyes Zuna, was brutally stabbed, initially suspected to be an attempted murder, including wounds on her neck and back.
During her opening statement, Senior Asst. Orange County District Attorney Susan Price said on the morning of January 21, 2021, Gutierrez went to the kitchen and grabbed two knives. She is then accused of entering the couple’s bedroom, locking the door behind her and stabbing Zuna repeatedly.

The 9- and 10-year-olds heard their father scream and reportedly tried to enter their parents’ rooms, kicking and knocking them on the locked door before eventually fleeing to a nearby relative’s house, the OC Outlet reported.
Price told the ju umpire that the couple’s marriage was “broken” prior to the murder, and that Gutierrez believed he would lose a child, and that “she didn’t know what else to do.”
Gutierrez’s lawyer, OC’s public defense attorney Jazmin Torres rebutted, informing the ju judge that the 32-year-old’s mental health is swirling due to the side effects of the medication he was taking due to epileptic seizures.
Torres was at the height of the pandemic, saying Gutierrez lacks health insurance and struggles to see doctors due to pandemic-related restrictions.
“What she was trying to do was get help,” the register told Torres to the ju judge. “She got paranoid and she began to think that people were following her.
