A 27-year-old Oxnard man has been sentenced in the 2019 shooting that injured a pregnant mother and left her 7-year-old daughter paralyzed, authorities announced Monday.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, on July 2, 2019, Jaylin Edwards and another man, then 17, were shot and killed at a Port Hueneme home where the man they were looking for was believed to be living. Ta.

However, there was a family of five living inside the home, and authorities said they were sitting in the living room at the time.

The investigation revealed that at least eight of the 12 shots fired struck the residence, and three of the shots struck a family inside.

A 7-year-old girl was shot in the head and her pregnant mother was hit twice, once in the leg and twice in the thigh, authorities confirmed. Police later identified the daughter as Kaylana Davis and the mother as Mariam Davis.

Kaylana was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and then airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she remained in a coma for three weeks, authorities said.

After three months in the hospital, authorities report Kaylana has returned home, but the girl remains paralyzed on the left side of her body and has permanent cognitive impairment.

Mariam was also hospitalized that night and required surgery to treat her gunshot wound, but was released the next day, authorities said.

The night of the shooting, delays in emergency response sparked controversy surrounding the incident. Officials addressed the response to the crime at a press conference the next day.

“The father physically picked up the child and ran to the fire department down the street. Unfortunately, the fire department was unresponsive and did not respond,” said Port Hueneme Police Chief Andrew Salinas.

The Ventura County Fire Department later released a statement saying they are investigating the circumstances of that night’s emergency response and are speaking with firefighters to confirm the facts.

The first arrest in the investigation came about five months later when Port Hueneme police arrested a 17-year-old Oxnard resident named Anthony Silerio, according to reports.

Although investigators reported finding only one of the two firearms used in the shooting as a result of this arrest, the totality of the evidence collected led investigators to Edwards.

A warrant for Edwards’ arrest was issued on November 1, 2021, and police say a month-long manhunt ensued before he was arrested in the Inland Empire in December of that year.

Nearly three years after his arrest, the prosecutor’s office announced that Edwards was found guilty on Nov. 15, 2024, of attempted murder, firing into an occupied dwelling, and two counts of assault with a semi-automatic weapon, all felonies. be.

The prosecutor’s office notes that the jury also found all special allegations true, including causing serious bodily injury (GBI) and personal and intentional discharge of a firearm that caused GBI.

“Edwards also acknowledged the additional aggravating factors of a crime involving mass violence, being armed and using a weapon, participating in an act of violence, and that the victim was vulnerable,” the DA’s office release said. It is listed.

Edwards is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2025 and could face up to 73 years and four months to life in state prison, officials said.

The prosecutor’s office said Silerio was charged in juvenile court with the shooting and his case is pending in juvenile court.
