A 24-year-old San Diego County man died last week after being electrocuted while installing Christmas lights on the roof of his home, authorities said.
The accident occurred on Thursday, November 21st in Escondido. According to the San Diego County Coroner’s Office, Antonio Pascual Mateo was hanging Christmas lights near high-voltage power lines.
The coroner said: “The deceased threw an electric light onto the power lines, causing electrocution.”
Someone called 911, and when paramedics arrived at the Skyline Drive home, they found Mateo hanging upside down from a tree. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
A GoFundMe supporting Mateo’s family had raised more than $8,200 as of Monday afternoon.
“He had so much to live for,” GoFundMe organizer Jual Pascal wrote. “He always took care of his mother and family…He will forever remain young. Christmas lights will forever have meaning to us. He will forever be in our hearts. It will remain inside.”
Pascual said the funds raised will help the family pay for Mateo’s transportation and burial in his native Guatemala.
