Her mother and her boyfriend were found guilty of torture and murdering a 7-year-old girl in Hawthorn.
Ida Helen Brockman, 34, and 33-year-old Malachi Xavier Warren were convicted of the death of Brockman’s daughter, Amiya Dawson, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
On September 9, 2021, the couple brought an unresponsive girl to Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Willowbrook.
She was found with multiple serious injuries. Hospital staff, known as Hawthorn Police, on suspicion of child abuse. The officer spoke to the couple and determined that the girl’s injuries were not consistent with their statement.
A murder investigator with the LA County Sheriff’s Department looked into an apartment in the 3000 block of El Segundo Boulevard where the couple and their children lived together and found the crime scene. Brockman and Whelen were taken into custody.
During questioning, authorities said the couple tried to frame the girl’s biological father for the murder. But Brockman ultimately admitted the lie, prosecutors said.
According to LA County Medical Inspectors, the young girl endured physical torture and suffered more than 58 personal injuries, including severe burns, blunt force trauma, multiple fractured ribs, collapsed lungs and other serious internal injuries.
On July 2, 2025, following the 10-week trial, ju judges discovered that Brockman and Hollen had committed one count of murder and one count of torture.
Additionally, it was found that Brockman had committed a crime of child abuse that caused the death, and Warren was convicted of one count of assault on a child causing the death.
