A robbery suspect who robbed a Fairfax-area grocery store Monday night and attempted to flee in a self-driving car is in custody, police confirmed to KTLA.
Details are limited, but Los Angeles Police Department officials say the incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. at the Ralphs grocery store at the intersection of West 3rd Street and La Brea Street.
Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly what happened inside the store, but police say the suspect stole an unknown quantity of merchandise, got into an altercation with store security, and then drove away from a Waymo self-driving car. It is said that he fled.
There are unconfirmed reports that the suspect used pepper spray to escape from security personnel, but police have not yet confirmed specific details.

Responding officers were informed that the suspect fled in the Waymo and were eventually able to locate the self-driving vehicle.

Video of the traffic stop obtained by KTLA shows at least four patrol cars following the driverless vehicle when it stopped about three miles from the intersection of South Wilton Place and Country Club Drive in Arlington Heights. There was a cruiser.
