Sovereignty and journalism competed in Belmont’s interests after sovereignty was drawn from Preakness to end the Triple Crown bid. Alvarado also won his first derby in sovereignty.
Not racing at Preakness allowed Journalism to compete in all three triple crown races and collect through the victory in Baltimore. The final Triple Crown winner was Justify in 2018, but sovereignty went 3-2.
Journalism began on Saturday morning with 8/5 odds and gained sovereignty on 2/1. Baeza had odds of 4/1 on the eight-horse field. Journalism moved to 5/2 just before the race against Baeza on 7/2.
The races, which were typically held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, were held for the second consecutive year at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Belmont Park is 12 furlongs or 1/2 mile long, while Saratoga Race Course is 10 furlongs or 1 1/4 mile.
The 156th Belmont Stakes were won by Dornoch, a 17-1 long shot that finished in the 2:01.64 hour.
