An attempt to steal copper at Van Nuys caused a widespread internet outage affecting Swas in Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Sunday.
“This morning our line was cut off due to Van Nuisse’s vandalism that also affected our services in Los Angeles and other parts of Ventura,” spokesman Dennis Johnson said. “The technicians are restoring services this morning in Ventura and continuing to restore services in Los Angeles this afternoon,” Johnson said in an update on the company’s recovery services progress.
The incident stems from a copper wire burglar – searching for copper in a place where no one was there.
The company said one or more individuals will cut multiple fiber lines on the poles and obviously climb the trees to get access. The line was cut after midnight.
Users reported on social media that the internet was on the way home before dawn on Sunday and throughout the day.
On X, user @StrappyHeels said, “Customers have been suspended from 2am and there are no ETAs.
Another obvious customer, @5Cottfive, expressed distrust on social media in a posted description by Spectrum citing “criminal acts of vandalism.”
“There is no way a single act of vandalism took out the internet of the area for all counties in the Ventura and Ross angle,” the user posted. “This is a serious stop all the way to Ventura, Ojai, Stains, Valleys and apparently Anaheim.”
However, the halt was not universal and for some it didn’t last long. At 4:57pm, @LadyBugzz21 posted that the internet in the San Fernando Valley was working.
Work to restore some areas continued into the evening, the company said.
The company had to make “thousands of” textile splices to repair the line. This is a time-consuming process even with the help of the extra crew called in, saying, “The fibers need to be spliced into the line to restore service.”
In its statement, Spectrum said that cutting wires “is a problem that affects not only the spectrum but the entire telecommunications industry, as it is largely due to rising prices for precious metals. These vandalisms are not only criminal, but also impact customers, local businesses and potential emergency services.”
The statement said “Spectrum’s fiber line does not contain copper.”
The company said it is working with the Los Angeles Police Department to provide a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
