The negotiations are scheduled to resume Wednesday between around 12,000 Stater Brothers workers and unions representing the grocery chain following the announcement of an overwhelming membership vote in support of allowing union negotiating teams to call strikes on unfair labor practices.
A strike approval voucher does not necessarily mean that a strike will occur.
The united food and commercial workers representing workers said they wanted “living wages, affordable medical benefits, reliable pensions (and better working conditions for more staffing, better customer experience).
The union charged Stater Brothers:
Illegal surveillance of members active in contract campaigns. Discrimination against members based on union support. Illegal interrogation of members. They bypassed the union and did not directly deal with the union with any proposals under consideration in negotiations, and did not provide the information the union requested in preparation for collective negotiations.
The UFCW Stater Bros. Bargaining Committee said, “We didn’t have to vote to attack unfair labor practices on Stater Bros., but the company has been changed.”
“Since March, we have been seeking Stater Bros. for real solutions to short staffing, dangerous situations and unfair wages, but we are underestimating our rights, as reflected in these ULP fees.”
The number of votes has not been announced.
“We want to return to the negotiation table to reach an agreement that reflects the value and importance of our store’s teammates, to help us maintain our company’s long-term health and maintain our line on grocery prices,” Stater Bros. said in a statement.
