The union representing thousands of Stater Bros. Markets employees voted in favor of approving the strike as it continues to negotiate with the grocery chain.
Negotiations are scheduled to resume on Wednesday between the union representing approximately 12,000 Stater Bros. workers and company representatives. The union’s negotiation team has denounced the grocery store chain’s unfair labor practices.
“This vote sends a strong message to stitute BROS. We have ample tactics to fill the union that undermine workers and silence our voices,” the Stator Brothers Negotiation Committee, United Food and Commercial Workers, said in a statement released Friday.
“And if they think of Stater Bros, members might scare them to stand up for our rights, they learned tonight that they’re very wrong.
“We didn’t have to vote for unfair labor practices at Stater Bros., but the company has changed. Since March, we have pushed for real solutions to short staffing, unsafe conditions and unfair wages in Stater Bros., but what we saw is the disrespect of our rights as reflected in these ULP fees.”
The number of votes has not been announced.
There was no response to an email sent to Stater Bros. on Friday night after normal business hours closed for comment.
Locals at UFCW, representing the store’s employees, charged Stater Brothers:
Illegal surveillance of members active in contract campaigns. Discrimination against members based on union support. Illegal interrogation of members. They bypassed the union and did not provide direct handling of the union’s proposals under consideration in negotiations, and the information they requested in preparation for collective bargaining negotiations.
The union said it wanted “living wages, affordable medical benefits, reliable pensions (and better working conditions for more staffing, better customer experience).
A strike approval voucher does not necessarily mean that a strike will occur.
