No injuries were reported after a firearm could have been discharged from hospital at a school in Marina del Rey.
The student is said to have been discharged from a “possible firearm” in the classroom on the Westside Global Awareness Magnet at Marina Del Rey on Wednesday morning.
There have been no reports of injuries. The campus has temporarily entered lockdown.
Law enforcement sources reported that the student was a 13-year-old boy and that the gun was accidentally removed from the inside of his backpack between 8am and 8:30am.
Los Angeles’ unified messages to parents did not specify the age or gender of the student or the exact time of the incident.
“Today, students are allegedly draining possible firearms in the classroom and then fled campus,” according to a message issued at 10:40am, “No students or staff were injured. The campus was wiped out by law enforcement and the lockdown was lifted.”
In the message, the agency said “immediate measures have been taken, including notifying the Los Angeles School Police Department and the Regional West Project for further investigation.”
The district’s message states parents of “impacted students” have been notified.
As typical in these circumstances, LA School Police will “provide on-campus support and additional patrols for the rest of the week,” the message said.
Counseling services are also available.
The school is also scheduled for a parent meeting on Zoom today at 4pm.
A previous message, sent at 9:11am, said, “We had a situation where we had a closure on campus for each district policy. Students and staff are safe. The school’s police and districts are on campus. There is no immediate threat to students at this time.”
Westside Global Awareness Magnet Span School offers an 8 grade from K, and is “a small, family-friendly campus located between the Venice Beach coastline and the Balonna Creek wetlands.
