Six Flags Magic Mountain is permanently closing its popular but troubled Superman roller coaster, according to a new report this weekend.
Maintenance issues have long plagued Superman: Escape from Crypton, which has been closed since September.
“Like other roller coasters within the theme park industry, these coasters have a life cycle,” Magic Mountain president Jeff Harris said in a video conference call, the OC register reported. “We just reached a point where we need to make wise decisions about where we really reinvest the funds that will improve the guest experience the most, and it doesn’t really make much sense from a business standpoint to get it back to Superman.
“Some parts are outdated. It’s really hard to get parts to keep them alive.”
Lex Luther: Drop of Doom, a 400-foot drop ride mounted on the Superman Coaster Tower, will resume in April after seasonal maintenance work, according to reports.
Superman: Escape from Crypton opened in 1997 and was once the fastest and tallest coaster in the world.
Harris added that park officials have not yet decided what to do with the structure of the Ride building.
