US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts warned of the dangers of politicians on Saturday using heated rhetoric to judges.

“It was surrounded by a political dispute that the judges who work are part of the matter,” Roberts told the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, a gathering of judges and lawyers.

“And of course, the danger is that someone might pick it up. And of course, we had serious threats of judge violence and murder simply to do their job. So I think the political people on both sides of the aisle need to keep that in mind.”

Roberts didn’t name anyone, but when he felt compelled to oppose rhetoric by Democrats and Republicans in the past, he appeared to be referring to President Donald Trump and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump has criticized judges multiple times over the years. This calls him an “extreme left” and a “madman” in pursuit of a judge’s ammo for opposition to the deportation policy earlier this year.

At the time, Roberts said, “For over two centuries it has been established that ammo each is not an appropriate response to differences in opinion over judicial decisions. There is a normal appeal review process for that purpose.”

In 2020, Roberts accused Schumer of saying that Trump-appointed Supreme Court judges Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch would “pay the price” in Trump’s first term in office.

“You’ve released a whirlwind, and you’ll pay the price,” Schumer said at a rally outside the Supreme Court at the time. “If you proceed with these terrible decisions, you don’t know what hit you.”

Schumer later said he was referring to political prices that Senate Republicans believed would pay, but he said, “I should not have used the words I did, but I never pose a threat.

At the time, Roberts said of Schumer: “While criticism comes with territory, we know that this kind of threatening statement from the highest level of government is not only inappropriate, but also dangerous.

In April, an armed man arrested outside Kavanaugh’s house pleaded guilty to attempting to assassinate Justice.

Roberts’ remarks came after the Supreme Court issued a final decision for its term. He handed the Trump administration a victory on Friday by limiting his ability to block his agenda through court orders.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
