The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear challenges to gun laws in Delaware and Maryland.
Delaware gun enthusiast groups and firearms advocacy groups have filed an appeal seeking to block the state’s ban on assault-style rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines after a lower court refused to issue a preliminary injunction against the ban. They rejected it.
Delaware’s gun safety law, enacted in 2022, bans a variety of semi-automatic “assault” long guns, including AR-15s and AK47s, but does not apply to anyone who owned such guns before the law’s enactment. A person is permitted to store a firearm under certain conditions. According to Reuters.
The high court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, also challenges Maryland’s handgun permit requirements that require people to undergo safety training, submit fingerprints and pass a background check before purchasing a handgun. refused to hear the lawsuit.

A three-judge appeals court panel expanded gun rights and ruled in a landmark 2022 Supreme Court decision that firearms laws must have strong roots in this country’s historical traditions. The law was subsequently invalidated, but the full Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals later reinstated the law. After the majority found it compatible with historic firearm regulations.
