Instead of hanging ten surfers, some Newport Beach, had to cut and run after being sued by an offensive sea lion.
Sea lions ousted beach fans out of the water to the coast, Fox 11 LA reported Thursday. The animal is most likely to suffer from the effects of domain acid poisoning, the station reported.
Domain acids are neurotoxins produced by harmful algae flowers that accumulate in fish that feed filters containing anchovy and sardines, which are eaten by seals, sea lions and dolphins.
Sea lions have a survival rate of 50% to 65% when taken for treatment in a timely manner, experts say. However, it can be difficult to do so, as adult women weigh 250 pounds, adult men weigh up to 1,000 pounds, and several people need to move each animal.
A domo acid event occurred in California two years ago, killing more than 1,000 sea lions.
San Pedro’s Marine Mammal Care Center consumes more than 100 sick sea lions, according to the organization. Dolphins also suffer from the effects of poison, but are left behind on the beach and almost always prone to death.
Domoacid blooms usually occur every 3-7 years. However, they have deteriorated over time due to human activity and climate change, resulting in warming ocean temperatures.
