Signs from the Torrance robbery crime scene could be linked to South American criminal groups as the city sees a surge in home invasions, the Torrance Police Department said Tuesday.
Members of international crime groups are believed to have entered the US without a visa before returning to their country by committing crimes such as high-end home robbery.
The groups behind crime tourism often install surveillance cameras in front of targets to monitor the routines and vulnerabilities of residents found in Arcadia and Garden Globes.
“Community members are required to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their homes and families,” Torrance police said, encouraging neighbors to raise awareness and secure homes.
Police said the tactics used in the robbery of a Torrance home appear to be similar to those used by the international theft group.
“Attach unfamiliar individuals and vehicles in your neighborhood. If you notice someone acting suspiciously, trust your instinct,” police said.
The same robbery style could also be replicated by local criminals in Southern California, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell.
“You could be using jummers to put your cameras in a car parked on the street across from the property or the Target House, using more sophisticated advance surveillance.
One of the most recent robbers in Torrance saw three people close into the house in the middle of a day last weekend.
They broke into the homeowners while they were away. When the residents returned home, the two robbers escaped in a getaway car driven by their accomplices, carrying items worth thousands of dollars, including firearms.
It was not immediately clear whether Saturday’s robbery also linked to the South American theft ring.
