Officers arrested a grand theft auto suspect in Highlands after he attempted to sneak into a crime scene in a recently stolen car, police announced Friday.
The Upland Police Department said officers were speaking with a victim in the area of 8th Street and Sinclair Avenue Wednesday night when the suspect reappeared.
“The suspect returned and attempted to sneak down the street with his lights off in hopes of recovering the backpack,” according to a release from Und.
The suspect successfully finds his backpack, but he finds it in the hands of a police officer who is staring directly at him.
Police said officers found this backpack next to where the victim’s car was parked, and upon investigation, determined that not only did the suspect have GTA prerequisites, but that he was a GTA felon. Included were IDs that revealed an active presence on probation.
“Obviously this guy has made a life choice and he’s not done yet,” Update said in a release.
After coming face-to-face with law enforcement, the suspect took off in a stolen Camry and began a police pursuit.
Und said the man briefly spewed out the car before jumping out and running to a nearby apartment.
In his hurry, the suspect left the stolen car in the drive. As a result, police said the car rolled across Eighth Avenue and struck a parked car.
Officers, who were still pursuing the suspect, set up a perimeter, fired a drone, and summoned both the department’s K9s.

“After the suspect was given a K9 warning and heard two different police dogs barking from the other side of the fence (no picking on your venom in this situation), he wisely surrendered. I did,” said Upd.
Authorities did not immediately identify the suspect.
“The suspect went to jail on multiple felonies. The silver lining for him…he got his backpack back,” the department’s release concluded.
