The Manhattan Beach Police Department is investigating after two people in the vehicle grabbed her and tried to drag her to the ground as they drove.
It happened around noon on February 19th in the 3400 block of Palm Avenue in Manhattan Beach, according to the police department’s monthly crime report.
The victim contacted police after being stolen by two people in a blue sedan. Police said the victim was walking to her driveway when the vehicle stood up, and the driver called her and asked for the way.
The driver, known as a Middle Eastern man in his 30s or 40s, handed the victim a cell phone and asked him to tell him to translate as he wasn’t very good in English.
After translating and handing her over the phone, the driver grabbed her with his wrist, sliding the ring on his finger and attempting to slip two gold chains around his neck.
As she pulled away, a passenger, a dark-haired Middle Eastern woman, reached out through the back window, grabbed the victim with a chain she was already wearing, and tore her from her neck.
The victim fought back, police said, clutching her own jewel before the driver spits out, dragging her to the ground.
When police arrived, the woman had a rubbing on her knee, but she was fine if not. The jewels the man tried to ride on her were retrieved nearby and collected for DNA, police said.
Since then, detectives have been using the neighborhood for video surveillance. The police report did not say whether they were successful in finding a video of the incident.
The crime is treated as a robbery and the investigation is described as continuing.
