German police said Thursday that 27 people were injured when the car plowed into a Munich city crowd when an official called “suspected attacks.”
The incident came the day before the start of a major security conference attended by world leaders.
The car driven by a 24-year-old Afghanistry attacks pedestrians in the city centre near or near Dachauer Strasse and Seidl Strasse, prompting a “major police operation” and police say the driver of the car added that it was “secured” by police. And there’s no further threat.
At a press conference with police and the Bavarian government, officials said at least 27 people had been injured. Previously, Munich police said at least two of them were seriously injured.
There is a large presence of police and firefighters on the scene, and police are warning the public to avoid the area.
Police spokesman Thomas Shelshawn told NBC News on the scene that the motives remained unknown, but confirmed that union demonstrations were taking place nearby.
The Munich Security Conference, the annual general meeting of politicians and defense officials around the world, is scheduled to begin on Friday amidst the presence of police and strict security protocols.
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be present and will meet with US partners to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine during the summit.
