Union boss Sean O’Brien testified before Congress that the “secret” of Teamsters’ international brotherhood in implementing tariffs.
On Tuesday, R-Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno told O’Brien that he believes he is sincere when he talks about public policy that will help grow the “middle class that thrives in this country.”
“It’s not an act,” suggests Moreno, confirming O’Brien.
“I think someone called me the boss of the Self-Promotion Union in one of the articles, but I’m not the boss of the Self-Promotion Union. I’m a truck driver in middle-class families who value and accept the preservation of the middle-class,” O’Brien said before a Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Senate Transportation.
“It’s no secret what our position as a customs union is.”

O’Brien was more open than the union boss to snatch the heat from the left to agree to speak at the 2024 Republican National Convention and to engage with the Trump administration.
During the hearing, he acknowledged public concerns about the timing and details regarding the implementation of Trump’s tariff regime and its impact on US consumers.
However, he condemned the 1993 NAFTA agreement, which was forged under the Clinton administration, and the current framework for overseas work.
“Remember, there were a lot of industries in this country where we produced goods and services. We were making steel. We were doing a lot of this job. And these bad trade transactions happened…”

O’Brien also has concerns about unemployment, but added that there are other cost factors in the new tariff system.
He said that Corporate America should be responsible for some of the negative fallout from tariffs.
“Don’t give this cost to consumers a little less in their pockets, stop giving more on Wall Street, just reward workers, don’t give this cost to consumers,” he said.
“We need to look at the excessive compensation of many of these CEOs and these companies and their willingness to reward Wall Street on behalf of those who work in these jobs.”
According to O’Brien, Teamsters representing UPS as one of the biggest workers and one of the biggest workers are concerned about foreigners who don’t know English or US traffic laws, and are allowed to work on a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Trump in April officially declared the strict English proficiency standards for CDL drivers that Moreno also asked union bosses.

Moreno pointed out that as an immigrant from Colombia himself, his parents requested him to learn English and asked O’Brien what he thought about the flood of drivers with English lighting letters on the same road where his members have their parcels every day.
“To be honest, I think it’s very scary, there are a lot of trucking companies that are actively recruiting overseas, and they took people there, trained them and put them on the roads.
“That’s why our members are very passionate. By the way, our membership is representative from the first generation of immigrants who have come here.
He proposed another solution that allows Mexican truckers to drop trailers at US borders.
