Police say the fight between groups of minors escalated into a gunfire exchange, killing one teenager outside a house party in Covina.
Law enforcement was called to the 700 block of Peachtree Lane just after 10pm to report shots fired near a house party. Upon arrival, officers saw several teenagers fleeing the scene, Covina Police Department said.
As the investigation unfolded, officers learned that the shooting victim was being driven by a friend to a nearby hospital. The individual died at the scene.
The shooting victim was identified only as a teenage boy. His exact age and identity have not been revealed.
Officials say the house party at the heart of the investigation was heavily promoted on social media. One adult, who was said to be a resident of the house, attended during the party. However, the homeowner was not there. Most of the participants at the event were teenagers.
“It’s a big concern to think that your child is just dating friends. The biggest concern is having those conversations with your child and understanding what they are doing, what they are doing, who they are dating,” Sgt. Ray Marquez of the Covina Police Station. “Because sometimes they’re innocent, but obviously they’re involved in things that kids shouldn’t be involved. So I think the biggest message here is to really understand what your kids are doing, where they go and who they are with.”
Police found a gun on the ground at the scene and the two were taken into custody for questioning. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Details were not available, although it led to a battle that escalated into the shooting. No descriptions of gunman are provided.
The investigation is underway.
