Three Bay Area High School athletes in Southern California said they were surprised by the horrifying noise of rattling at the hotel room door during their team’s stay in Orange County.
One of the teenage girls said she woke up to anxious sounds early on Friday after midnight and saw a bent wire slipping under the door of the Marriott Delta Hotel room in Garden Grove.
“Our first thought was that it was someone who was coming out there and trying to lure him out,” Charlotte, 17, told the NBC Bay Area. “We were all really scared.”
Charlotte recorded a video of the wire. The wire had a loop at one end, and it moved back and forth before wrapping around the inner door handle. She grabbed the wire and tried to talk to the person moving it from outside the hallway.
“To be honest, it was probably one of the most horrifying things that really happened to me,” she said.
I can hear someone on the other side of the door responding, “Hello? Is someone still here?”
The NBC Bay Area contacted the hotel and the general manager but did not receive a response.
Charlotte’s mother said she met with the hotel’s general manager and was told the incident included a room check.
“They made sure it was an employee,” she said. “When I asked if an employee had been fired, he was told he would be fired.”
The girl was given a gift basket and a balloon, she said. They later switched rooms after a mysterious series of events.
“I don’t know. Was it theft? Was it human trafficking? I want to know,” Charlotte’s mother told the NBC Bay Area. “The provided descriptions will not be summed.”
Charlotte’s mother, her coach and other parents submitted police reports to the Garden Grove Police Station. Police said the agency is investigating whether the incident is a crime or a misunderstanding.
“There are maintenance records and stuff like that, so what’s that is why detectives want to look into it more, whatever the hotel has to do with staff and work orders,” Sgt. Nick Jensen.
