The 14-year-old attempted murder charges with the stab wounds of another teenager during a protest in LA earlier this month against President Trump’s planned mass expulsion efforts, prosecutors said.
The unidentified teenager refused to file charges at a hearing Tuesday and will return to court next month, according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities cited millions of Americans in the sixth day of protests in downtown Los Angeles, after a fight broke out in the 200 block of Spring Street on February 7th at about 1:30pm. He said the stab wounds occurred after a fight opposed to Trump’s plan to deport him. Illegal. Police previously said the victim, identified as a 17-year-old boy, is in a state of crisis.
A Los Angeles police spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for updates on the victim’s condition or questions about what began the fight.
“Violence has no place in our public spaces,” Atty, Los Angeles County. Nathan Hochman said in a statement. “We understand that people have the right to express their opinions, but this right must be exercised with respect for the safety and happiness of others. Our support is for the victims and their families as they navigate this difficult time and begin the recovery process.”
Thousands of people flocked to downtown earlier this month to temporarily close the 101 highway spread in protest of Trump’s aggressive immigration policies. There are approximately 15 million immigrants in the United States without proper documentation, and 2 million are estimated to reside in California.
Hochman said he would attempt to prosecute more juveniles as adults during his time in office last year, but teens under the age of 16 must remain in juvenile court under California law.
The 14-year-old is represented by the LA County Public Defense Department. A spokesperson could not immediately provide a comment.
