The LA 2028 countdown continues as Los Angeles prepares to host thousands of athletes for the Olympics in three years. The location is still fixed, but Temecula hopes to host an equestrian competition for a major event.
Although the majority of the Olympic venues are located in LA County, Temecula’s Equestrian Center is gaining attention as a potential venue. The International Olympic Committee was able to finalize its decision this week, saying the city is ready for the task if given the opportunity.
“It’s the last thing we’ll be able to solidify our conclusions,” said Ken Smith, owner of Galway Downs. “It was a long process – four years. Many people were here many times and saw property in different regions and angles, including towns and infrastructure.
He said that his basis is not only ready for the international stage, but the entire Temecula community is ready as a whole.
“We couldn’t be proud and we couldn’t be very excited about the long-term meaning,” Smith said. “We’re excited about the day, but for decades, we’ve been excited about what it does.”
Companies in the old town of Temecula hope that the Olympic crow’s potential will help boost the economy and increase tourism. Sukelly, who owns Old Town Spice & Tea Merchant on Fifth Street, said he feels the city’s infrastructure, hotels and transport are ready to welcome everyone.
“We have four years to put it together,” she said. “We know we’re ready, we know we’re ready at this spice shop.”
“The Olympics are very important, but it’s an ongoing business in the equestrian world, what does this mean for the West Coast,” Smith said. “This isn’t just Temecula. It’s bigger than Temecula and bigger than SoCal.”
