A Tesla driver speeding along the San Diego County Freeway intentionally plunged into the motorcyclist and killed him, prosecutors say. The driver pleaded not guilty to the murder.
Ulysses Jimness, 22, faces alleged murder, six counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of hit and run that suffered death or permanent serious injuries. He was arrested Monday and pleaded not guilty to all charges in the Superior Court of Chula Vista, said Tanya Sierra, a spokesman for the San Diego County District Attorney.
The complaint alleges that Jimines purposely attacked Jorge Uribe, 53, who was driving a motorcycle on the carpool lane on Interstate 805 in Chula Vista, before fleeing the scene.
On June 30, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement it received a report of a crash on the 805 North Highway on Telegraph Canyon Road.
San Diego’s Jimines drove a 2023 Red Tesla model south on high speeds in HOV lanes and “deliberately drove behind a 2025 grey BMW motorcycle,” CHP said.
Motorcyclist Uribe was declared dead at the scene. Motorcycles can generally be driven in carpool lanes in California.
After the crash, Tesla hit a pickup truck carrying six passengers. They maintained minors and remained mildly injured and were taken to hospital.
Jimines is then allegedly escaped the scene on foot, as was filmed on video by other drivers before being arrested by CHP officials.
If convicted, Jimines faces life in prison. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for late October.
