Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is launching an investigation into the city of Dallas over local sanctuary urban policies protecting illegal immigration.

On Thursday, Paxton released an investigation and issued a formal request for city and Dallas police department records regarding the police department’s refusal to comply with state and federal immigration laws.

“The law is not an option. Local governments have no authority to ignore state and federal immigration laws,” Paxton said in a statement. “The people of Texans expect law enforcement to maintain public safety and not implement sanctuary policies that put their communities at risk.”

“My office will take all the legal action necessary to ensure compliance with state laws and to take responsibility for local businesses that violate legal obligations,” he added.

Paxton’s office requested all policies, training materials and communications relating to the non-enforcement of immigration law, including all policies, training materials related to Dallas enforcement or non-enforcement of immigration law, as well as records that reflect decisions to refuse cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Paxton said the chief’s remarks “sprinkle concerns” that the city and police departments are likely violating Texas law.

Texas has been taking a tough stance against illegal immigration, especially during the Biden administration. The state deploys authorities at the border with Mexico, campaigning to buses to migrants to democratically operated cities, and pays attention to the flow of illegal immigration to the US
