This week, the main votes are being tapped in the high stakes battle between Republicans and Democrats over Congressional districts ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
In Austin, Texas, during the second straight special session called by conservative Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, the GOP-controlled nation’s House of Representatives resumed Wednesday.
At the top of their to-do list when they return to work, they pass on a map of rezoned rezoning created by the GOP, which will create the largest congressional district leaning towards the Republicans, at the expense of seats currently managed by Democrats. Republicans currently manage 25 of the state’s 38 US home seats.
“Please pass this map as soon as possible. Thank you to Texas,” President Donald Trump wrote in a social media post Monday.

The Republican push in Texas coming to encourage Trump is part of the broader efforts of GOPs across the country to fill the majority of their razor-thin homes to control the chamber in the mid-2026 period, with administration parties traditionally facing seats of political headwinds and defeat.
Trump and his political team are aiming to prevent what happened in his first term at the White House, when Democrats returned to win a majority in the 2018 midterm elections.
Republicans in Red State of Texas enjoyed a super majority in Congress, and the state Senate passed a new map of the Congress last week at its first special legislative meeting.

But dozens of Texas Democrats fled the state to prevent a quorum in Texas home, effectively preventing Abbott and Republicans from moving forward with the new map.
Many Democrats who fled the state returned Monday and arrived at the state Capitol building as the House reopened. When they arrived they were cheered on by their supporters.

But with Republicans outpacing Democrats 88-62 at the Capitol, a new map is expected to pass when lawmakers return Wednesday.
“Let’s be clear where we are going from here. We are waiting, and we have quorum. Now is the time to act,” Republican Texas Senator Dustin Burrows said Monday.
During the strike, Abbott and Republican state attorney general Ken Paxton appealed to have some of the absent Democrats in office. Meanwhile, GOP Senator John Cornyn worked to get the help of the FBI in pursuit of AWOL lawmakers. Burrows then issued a civil arrest warrant and pledged to fine lawmakers $500 a day.

While Republicans in Texas are pushing to overturn the current Congress map, not facing constitutional constraints, California’s Newsom’s path is much more complicated.
The governor is moving to win voters’ approval to hold special elections this year and to revoke the constitutional amendments that created a nonpartisan constituency committee. A referendum would require a two-thirds majority vote in the Democratic-controlled California Legislature.
On Monday, Sacramento Democrats announced a bill that will move forward in a referendum.

“California and Californians are uniquely targeted by the Trump administration, and we are not going to sit idle while Texas and other states order the next election to sham and pursue more extreme and less popular policies,” Newsmom said in a statement.
The Democratic-controlled Congress is expected to approve the referendum on Thursday. Announced late last week, Democrats will create five more left-leaning Congressional districts at the expense of Republican minority in California.
“Here we are in open and obvious vision before one vote takes place in the 2026 midterm elections. [Trump] We are trying to rig the system again,” Newsom charged Thursday.
Last week’s appearance by Newsom is considered a candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination and also served as a fundraising kickoff to raise the bulk of campaign cash needed to sell California’s statewide rezoning push push.

Polls show that nonpartisan constituency committees, created more than 15 years ago, are still popular with most Californians.
So, instead of completely scrapping the committee, Newsom and California Democrats have pledged to temporarily replace it with Congress for the next three election cycles.
But former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who represented California’s Central Valley Congressional District for 17 years, appeared in Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Future.” grab. “
“November 4th will be an election where we can actually speak out,” said McCarthy, who leads GOP funding efforts to counter Newsom and California Democrats this fall.
On Tuesday, a handful of California Republican state lawmakers filed a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court to halt proposed district change reforms.
The driving force of temporarily replacing the committee has also been opposed by other well-known Republicans. Most visible is former governor of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the last elected governor of Democratic-controlled California.

The longtime Hollywood action star says he is mobilizing to oppose Newsom’s push to temporarily scrap the state’s nonpartisan constituency commission.
“I’m preparing for a gerrymandering fight,” Schwarzenegger wrote in a social media post Friday.
Schwarzenegger, who rose to global fame as the star of the film The Terminator 40 years ago, wore a T-shirt in the photo “End Gerrymandering.”
Schwarzenegger spokesman Daniel Kechel told Politico earlier this month.

“He’s against what Texas is doing and California is against the idea that it’s going to compete to the bottom to do the same,” Kechel added.
During his tenure as governor, Schwarzenegger appeared in the passage of constitutional amendments in California in 2008 and 2010, robbing the state’s legislative and congressional districts of his state from politicians and the power to put it into the hands of independent committees.
