A Texas sheriff, whose county shares 54 miles of Mexico’s southern border, told Fox News Digital, which saw a “dramatic decline” in illegal immigration crossings since President Donald Trump took office, that the decline has fallen sharply, especially in the past two weeks.
“Since President Trump took over, we have seen a continuous decline in anxiety,” Terrell County Sheriff Thadeus Cleveland told Fox. “This past two weeks period should have been busy as it coincides with the full moon cycle. That’s usually when we see more activity in our area.”

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced earlier this month that its border anxiety in April fell by 93% compared to the previous year. The CBP reported 129,000 fears under the Biden administration in April 2024, compared to 8,383 under Trump in the past month.
At the request of New Mexico President Donald Trump on May 8, 2025, US soldiers will take action at the Mexican border after the Department of Defense signed a new order declaring 110,000 acres of land on the Mexican border as a defense zone.
“You know, during the Biden administration, we saw record crossings and Gotaways in our county, just like the rest of the US-Mexico border,” Cleveland explained. “We also saw record levels of death from people trying to enter the US, so it was definitely a challenge for us when we talk about the 10th largest county in Texas, the 2,300 square miles and 54 miles of river.”

Cleveland’s comments come days after the San Diego Immigration Center was closed due to “an unprecedented decline in illegal crossings this year.”
“On 3/2025, the San Diego sector arrested 1,199 illegal aliens on an average of 38 per day, a 186% drop compared to 3/2024.”

Cleveland noted that if illegal crossings continue to plummet, additional facilities may be closed.

“As border activity is slower and there are less and less intersections, we are beginning to see more border patrols closing these south sides of the facility,” the Texas Sheriff added. “We don’t have anything here in the western Texas area. The closest we had was down on the Eagle Pass.”
