Texas could have a government department of efficiency (DOGE) shortly after lawmakers passed the bill to establish an efficiency office within the governor’s office.

Known as Senate Bill 14 (SB 14), the bill inspired by Elon Musk’s Doge, creates a new Texas Regulation Authority aimed at streamlining state regulations and eliminating unnecessary rules.

The advisory committee will also be formed in partnership with the governor to help Texas agencies reduce deficits, eliminate unnecessary or burdensome rules, and make regulations more cost-effective and transparent. The panel consists of employers, researchers, state agencies and the public.

SB 14 has passed both rooms in the Texas Legislature, headed to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk and signed the law. Abbott has not publicly stated whether he will sign the bill.

The bill was written by Weatherford Republican Phil King, and governors throughout Dan Patrick have previously said that it would save taxpayers money and help grow the Texas economy by “cutting red tape.”

Jason Chaffetz: Democrats made a fatal mistake against the dog

“I prioritized SB 14 because President Trump’s creation of the ‘Government Efficiency Department’ has led Texas to find ways to save taxpayers and businesses by cutting back on aggressive regulations,” Patrick said.

“The Texas miracle will last long into the 21st century, as our common sense, conservative approach to regulation will make Texans thrive and keep our economy strong.”

The bill also requires agencies to write rules in plain language to reduce paperwork and fees, and justify new rules with clear cost and profit analysis. It also gives the courts more power by challenging the interpretation of the body of law, moving their legal authority away from the agency.

Additionally, it requires the development of interactive websites that allow the public to easily search for agency rules and forms, as well as regulatory information via topics, industry or North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) codes.

Elon Musk-led Doge has shaken federal officials and discovered billions of dollars in wasted spending. Through contract cancellations and labor cuts, Doge said it has saved taxpayers $155 billion so far.
