The Texas Legislature is poised to take up a new Congressional District Change Bill, which was brought up by Republicans on Wednesday after weeks of pushbacks from Democrats.

It is unclear how quickly Republicans can vote for constituency plans, as Republicans have to debate the floor before they come to the vote. Nevertheless, it’s a victory for Republicans, but Democrats who fled the nation to block the plan have returned to the Capitol. If passed, the new Congress map could overturn the five seats Democrats currently hold for Republicans.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said New York Democrats will pursue their own constituency change plan, vowing to “fight against fire.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing a map of California’s Congressional Congress, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) that will overturn five Republican seats to Democrats.

Meanwhile, more Republican states, including Ohio, Florida, Indiana and Missouri, are considering whether they are moving forward with their own constituency change efforts, as are democracies like Maryland and Illinois.

But none of the district battles were more dramatic than Texas, where around 50 Democratic state lawmakers were excluded from a special legislative meeting in early August to block votes.

Democrats fled to Illinois and New York, but they faced a $500 fine for each day they refused to return home. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Republicans and other state officials either hit Democrats in lawsuits seeking criminal charges or have removed them from their duties altogether.

The strike ended when Democrats returned Monday, and said it achieved its goal of blocking votes during the first special legislative meeting and persuading Democrats from other states to take retaliatory measures.
