French Dip One of Sandwich’s original providers, Cole’s French Dip, will remain open a little longer than expected, restaurant officials confirmed to KTLA.
The historic Downtown Los Angeles eateries were originally scheduled to close permanently on August 3rd, but are now open for another 45 days. Coles is currently expected to close its doors in mid-September.
“This love and these rallying cry from the LA community was very heartfelt during this difficult time. It’s not only highly appreciated, but it’s truly eye-opening that enough noise and enough fight can really make a difference,” a restaurant spokesperson said in a statement.
The restaurant also praised the group’s advocacy, including the DTLA Residents Association, Independent Hospitality Union, Historical Core Bids, Central City Association and the DTLA Alliance.
Since news of the closure was destroyed in July, diners have gathered at Coles to pay their respects. The restaurant cited “reasonable reasons” for its decision to close, including economic impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic, Hollywood strikes, increased crime, increased labor and goods, luxury rent and legal challenges.
Located in downtown Los Angeles, Coles was founded in 1908 by entrepreneur Harry Cole and originally opened as a Red Carver.
As Eater LA first reported, chef Jack Gerlinghouse created his first French dip sandwich by dipping bread in jus to soften it for customers with sensitive gums.
