The community is in shock after an Irvine 13-year-old boy died of obvious self-harm, which an adult faced with criminal charges.
Officers and emergency medical workers responded to Heather Green and Weepingwood area homes around 2:40pm on Thursday in a report of a boy suffering from a bullet wound.
“When officers arrived, they found the injured boy and immediately began medical assistance. Sadly, he died after a while,” Irvine police said.
Investigators believe the injury is self-harm. “I don’t know at this point. I don’t know if it was intentional or accidental,” Sgt. Karie Davies said.
The teen, who was later identified as Jonathan Kazemi, did not live in the residence and was visiting a friend with another boy, but it was unclear if anyone was with him when the gun disappeared, police said.

“It doesn’t sound like a game, so we’re looking at what led to this and why this happened,” Davis said. “He was well received. A popular child, that’s… this is very tragic for his family and friends.”
Detectives said the gun was already in the residence and on Thursday evening he was interviewing at least one adult with the boy’s friend.
Authorities announced Friday that Douglas Jaeger, 56, of Irvine, has been arrested on suspicion of criminal storage of firearms and child danger.
The child’s name has not been officially released. Authorities confirmed he is an eighth grader at Southlake Middle School.
Police said they are working closely with the Irvine Unified School District, where support and resources will be provided to middle school students and staff.
