Transportation Security Administration says the actual ID deadline is May 7th. Actual ID requirements were established after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The enforcement of the new requirements is originally scheduled to begin in 2008.
Travelers warn: The federal government says it will begin implementing actual ID requirements at U.S. airports starting May 7th.
This means that travelers will need a real ID compliant license or other accepted passport identification format to pass security prior to domestic flights in the US.
The Transportation Authority said 81% of people approaching airport checkpoints already have real ID-compliant identifications, which differs from state to state.
Federal and state officials in recent weeks have urged travelers to book in the auto sector to update their licenses and other ID cards before the deadline, but availability is lacking.
“Please make your appointment as quickly as possible now,” John Esig, Federal Security Director for New York City Area Airport, said earlier this month at Lagardia Airport. “We certainly don’t want anyone to hold on without an actual ID at checkpoint,” Essig said.
The deadline has been repeatedly pushed back, but a sign reminds us that over the years, Real Reports’ travellers have increased to apply for US IDs. This week, TSA officials handed out flyers to travelers using QR codes with actual ID information at Laguardia airport.
Airlines have been reminding travelers of new requirements through customer emails and other channels. Frontier Airlines has a grey banner running along a website that notifies travelers of their actual ID requirements.
What is an actual ID?
The actual ID is an identification card like a driver’s license or a state-issued ID that complies with federal regulations launched in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. These hijackers used their condition ID and driver’s license, some of which were obtained fraudulently.
In 2005, Congress passed the Actual Identity Act, allowing the federal government to set standard for state IDs. Originally, it was supposed to come into effect in 2008, but has been repeatedly postponed, including during the pandemic.

“If the card does not have any of these markings, it is not actually ID compliant and cannot be accepted as proof of identity to board a commercial aircraft,” the Department of Homeland Security said.
Who should show it?
Travelers over the age of 18 must have an ID or another form of accepted ID for domestic flights in the US.

If you are unable to get your actual ID by May 7th, you have an option.
The TSA says you can use your US passport. A permanent residence card, also known as a green card. Or a trusted traveler ID, such as a global entry card.
Can I travel internationally using my actual ID?
no. However, you can choose an “enhanced ID” that also complies with the real ID that can be used for trips to Mexico and Canada.
Is the deadline true?
The TSA says deadlines are legal and travelers without an actual ID or other accepted documents may experience delays when passing security.
They could “face the possibility that additional screenings and security checkpoints will not be allowed,” the TSA said in a news release Friday.
The agency recommends travelers arrive at least three hours before a domestic flight if they do not have an actual ID or alternative.
“Identity verification is a security lynching pin and we make sure that passengers are confirmed to be the person they say before they go beyond the checkpoint,” spokesman Carter Langston said.
US travelers must comply with their actual ID to access certain federal facilities on domestic flights starting Wednesday, May 7th.
