Attorney General Pam Bondy announced Thursday a $50 million reward for information that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The Justice and the State Department have announced compensation starting at $25 million. The US has accused Maduro of supporting drug cartels and street gangs and running a corrupt and oppressive regime.

“Maduro will use foreign terrorist organizations such as TDA (Tren de Aragua), Sinaloa and Cartel of the Suns (Cartel de Soles) to bring deadly violence to our country,” Bondi said in a video message. “He is one of the world’s largest narcotic traffic and a threat to our national security.”

Cartel of the Sands is a Venezuelan drug lord and consists of senior Venezuelan officials. In March 2020, Maduro was charged with federal charges involving narcoterism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to own machine guns and destructive devices.

So far, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has seized 30 tonnes of cocaine associated with Maduro and his associates, Bondy said. Drugs are the leading source of income for the Mexican and Venezuelan cartels, she said.

Bondi pointed out that cocaine is often knitted with fentanyl, which would result in the loss of thousands of Americans. Secretary of State Marco Rubio frequently criticizes Maduro. Maduro said he is not a legitimate leader of the South American country following his 2024 election victory.

“A year later, by dictator Nicolas Maduro declares his unfounded self the winner of the people of Venezuela, the United States is maintaining solid support in unwavering support for Venezuela’s democratic order and the restoration of justice,” Rubio said last month. “Maduro is not the president of Venezuela and his administration is not a legitimate government.”

Rubio is threatening us a year after the contested election with Venezuela’s Maduro as the leader of “narcotelorists.”

“Maduro is the leader of the designated narcotelist organization Cartel de los Salles, and he is responsible for trafficking drugs to the US and Europe,” Rubio continued. “Maduro, currently being charged by our country, is corrupting Venezuelan agencies to support the US in cartel’s criminal drug trafficking scheme.”

In January, the State Department announced a $25 million reward for Mudro’s arrest.

The agency said Muduro had participated in a violent narcoterrorist plot with the Colombian Revolutionary Army (FARC), a designated foreign terrorist organization. Additionally, Maduro negotiated a multiton shipping of FARC-produced cocaine. Instructed the Suns cartel to provide FARC with military-grade weapons. Coordinates with drug traffickers in Honduras and other countries to promote massive drug trafficking. And essentially, they sought support from FARC leadership in training unlicensed militia groups that served as military forces for the Sands cartel.

In addition to the charges against him, the Justice Department has seized more than $700 million in assets related to Maduro, including two civil jets and nine vehicles, Bondi said.
