Here are the facts. The days leading up to Thanksgiving are some of the worst travel days of the year. That’s why you need to be prepared.
According to an official American Automobile Association (AAA) press release, “79.9 million travelers will travel 50 miles or more from home during Thanksgiving travel.” This is actually an increase of 1.7 million people from last year and an increase of 2 million people from 2019.
So what does that mean specifically for those of us living in LA? Well, please calm down, I think. But more than that, you can minimize the impact of anticipated traffic by avoiding roads that are predicted to be the busiest. We’re here to help you do just that so you don’t get stuck with the inevitable holiday backup of the 405 that’s being covered on every news helicopter.
The busiest holiday route overall is expected to be northbound Interstate 5 from Los Angeles to Bakersfield, according to AAA. The area will be at its busiest this Wednesday, November 27th, at 7:45pm, with a journey time of approximately 3 hours and 49 minutes (111% increase compared to normal journey times) .
However, local travel should peak tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 1 to 7 p.m., according to the Auto Club, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. Therefore, it is best to refrain from going out on that day as well.
Needless to say, returning to Los Angeles on Sunday will also be crowded, so aiming for an early departure may be your best bet. If you wait until Monday to return home, be aware that you’ll likely run into both Thanksgiving travelers and commuters.
The moral of the story, if nothing else, is that you’re likely to encounter traffic jams as you drive in and out of town this weekend. You’re probably already used to it. For many people, this holiday can be stressful. Therefore, try to remain calm, avoid getting in the way of traffic, and try to relax a little. Happy Thanksgiving!
