The bodies of passengers who died during an international flight to San Francisco are reportedly urging the aircraft to detour to Chicago, according to a report by SFGATE.
Neither airport officials nor airline representatives commented on the circumstances surrounding the death, nor refused to confirm the passenger’s identity, nationality or gender, the outlet reported.
According to Flight Tracking website FlightAware, TK Flight 79 left Istanbul on July 13th, while the Airbus A350-941 had crossed Greenland where passengers “suffered from a serious medical emergency.”
Initially, crew members were preparing to detour to Iceland’s Keflavik airport, but passengers were reportedly worsening and causing death.
“The result was a decision to continue towards North America, rather than bypassing outside the US airspace,” reported Aviation A2Z. “Once we entered the US, our crew chose to land at Chicago O’Hare (ORD), a major international hub that can handle emergency landings with appropriate medical support and facilities.”

The passenger’s bodies are likely under the jurisdiction of the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, but department spokesman Natalia Deleviney told SFGate there is no record of the incident that matches the deceased passengers or their descriptions.

The station manager of Turkish Airlines in San Francisco was merely informing the outlet that the remaining passengers had been rerouted on various flights that ultimately led them to their destination.
It is currently unknown where the passenger remains are.
A study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine on Flying Emergency, published in October 2021, found that deaths in flight were particularly rare.
“In-flight medical events related to commercial travel are very low and correspond to very low mortality in-flight,” the study authors wrote.
KTLA has contacted Turkish Airlines about the body location of the deceased passengers and is waiting for a response.
