The squirrel population in the popular Santa Monica Park is growing so large that the city is urging its public to refrain from stopping feeding them.
Dozens of small brown rodents can be seen in Parisades Park, and it appears they have grown to be fearful of humans. A flock of visitors fascinated by squirrels, feeding them, urging them to raise more brave and comfortable people.
While some may find wildlife easier in their eyes, there are concerns about the environmental population. Squirrels on the ground can dig holes in the land and damage the area.
“They are eroding the cliffs,” said a visitor named Jesus, who practices Tai Chi in the area. “If not, they’re beautiful to see.”
Signs posted near the park warn visitors who feed squirrels that they “create a native ecology imbalance.” In addition to affecting ecosystems and land, trash left by visitors feeding wildlife litters the area.
