A recently published internal investigation revealed that a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Survived after an overdose of fentanyl seized during his arrest.
The 2023 incident initially raised alarms as he believed he collapsed after being “exposed” to fentanyl. According to a 468-page internal report, the sheriff’s spokesman warned the media and some deputies who witnessed the near death of a colleague.
Deputy Marvin Morales was found to be unresponsive on the bathroom floor at the sheriff’s station. Drug equipment was in the pocket of his uniform.
Morales later told sheriff’s officials that he had been suffering from depression and that he took the drug “with the intention of committing suicide.” However, the investigation will reveal that this was not the first time Morales had used the drugs he had seized.
On October 24, 2023, in an incident that led to an overdose, Morales carried out a “suspicious subject halt” around 5:40pm, finding a dick bundle with methamphetamine sticking out of the suspect’s pants. Clinical narcotics testing will identify the drugs that were later seized as fentanyl, the report said.
Deputies treated their colleagues as Narcan after an overdose.

Almost three hours later, Morales, who was on duty and in full uniform, entered the public lobby and toilet in the central division of the sheriff’s South Sacramento Sheriff’s Office. The investigation found Morales was smoking some of the methamphetamine seized using a glass pipe.
Another aide discovered that Morales was unconscious on the bathroom floor. The glass pipe where the residue was burned was nearby, the report said. Officers managed Narcan to reverse overdose. Morales was taken to hospital for further treatment and survived.
Responding officers find a methamphetamine chinpole that Morales seized early in the pockets of his uniform’s pants.
The investigation found that on two separate occasions in August, Morales cited an individual about misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and then lied about how he disposed of the items.
In his routine crime reports regarding each incident, Morales said that he had taken a picture with an iPhone issued by the department and disposed of the sheriff’s station pipes, as I would use this photo as evidence to avoid breaking it due to the vulnerable condition of the glass pipe.
According to the report, Morales confessed in an internal interview that he had lied to one of the crime reports, brought methamphetamine pipe home and smoked three or four times of drug residue over four months.
Morales said, “Because he gave him the ‘energy’ and he gave him the ‘energy’ needed to write his in-laws report.”
Investigators challenged Morales’ claims by citing toxicological reports of his blood and hair samples as evidence of chronic drug use.
The report recommends that Morales be terminated, and the aide was informed of the results on January 4, 2024. The documents show that Morales resigned on February 2nd of the same year.
He voluntarily recognized the certification of peace officers this month, according to the California Committee on Standards and Training for Peace Officers.
Speaking of a colleague who sought treatment after his death, Morales said in an internal interview, “I want to apologize to them very badly, but I can’t. I’m not a very strong peer.”
He continued to apologise to his partner and the sheriff’s office.
“That’s why I did that in that bathroom,” he said. “I didn’t want to see me in the public.”
