Kevin Ashton, a sorority chef and content creator with millions of followers on social media, says he is “essentially cancer-free” after being originally given a 30% chance of survival.

In September 2023, Ashton, chef at Phi Sorority House at the University of Nevada PI Beta, was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma.

“My prognosis wasn’t that good,” he said in a weekend post. “And trust me, such news will change your life.”

Thanks to his gentle attitude, soft voice and easy-to-use instructional videos, Ashton, who his followers often call culinary Bob Ross, has accumulated over 5 million followers on Tiktok and Instagram, posting cooking videos and continuing to speak openly about diagnosis and treatment.

“It was an incredible journey,” he said. “There were a lot of ups and downs.”

Last summer, Ashton said his cancer mutations began to grow new tumors. The tumor was eventually eradicated with radiation, and after more than 20 infusions of immunotherapy, he received a positive update during his latest body scan.

“I got results on Friday, and it shows zero metabolism activity in my body,” Ashton said in his latest cooking video. “I’m essentially cancer-free.”

Throughout his journey, Ashton, whose social handle is @oldscoolkevmo, continued to support the importance of positivity, always signing his videos with “cheers” and his catchphrase “What a treat.”

He believed in the same positive outlook as the manufacturers in his treatment.

“I was all wrong in terms of treating your own cancers. I didn’t eat well, I didn’t exercise. “And the power of positivity brings wonders. It changed my life and changed the course of my cancer.”

Ashton thanked his followers for taking part in his cancer journey while making 20 servings of overnight oats in the Sorority House kitchen, and encouraged him to “keep a smile and continue trucking.”

And of course, he signed off with his trademark slogan, “What Treatment.” That was really the case this time.
