Lunette, a company that makes reusable menstrual cups, has been sent to several spaces to help female astronauts on a long-term mission.
Lunet Period Cups are reusable for up to 10 years with proper care, and are made from hypoallergenic medical grade silicone, offering an environmentally friendly, cost-effective alternative to disposable feminine hygiene products.
“Unlike tampons, they collect rather than absorb them, helping to maintain a natural pH balance while preventing odors and irritation,” says Lunet’s website.
To test the metle of the product, Lunet has decided to launch two menstrual cups into space via suborbital testing as part of the Astrocup project. According to Lunett, female astronauts are currently being forced to use hormonal contraceptives to completely suppress their menstruation during missions.

Lunette co-owner Aleksandra Oklinska said in a media release that having conversations surrounding menstrual care in the galaxy is “more important than ever” as more and more women are challenging the aerospace sector.
“As space travel expands and more women join missions across the national and commercial program, it’s more important than ever to have these conversations,” Oklinska said. “The need to address orbital menstrual care is more urgent than ever. All astronauts deserve access to care for a safe, effective and sustainable period.”
“This is one small step for menstrual health, one huge leap into space inclusion and equality,” added Oklinska.
