The creator of modern tequila sunrise has passed away

The creator of modern tequila sunrise, which was created and popular in the bars in Sausalito in the 1970s, passed away.

Longtime Trident bartender Robert “Bobby” Rozov died earlier this month in Hawaii from an unknown cause, frequently visited by famous bars, music venues and many famous people. He was 77 years old.

Rozov’s death was first reported by the Marine Independent Journal. Columnist Jeff Burkhart said Rozov’s longtime friend confirmed his death.

Rozov and co-bartender Billy Rice are believed to have created “the most famous and most popular version of Tequila sunrise,” according to the historic plaque, which marks the milestone built by Marin’s History Museum in 2023.

As the story progressed, Rozov offered drinks to members of the Rolling Stones in 1972 when the band was at Trident for a party.

It was a hit right away.

“I poured [the band member] Tequila sunrise, and you could see the light continuing in his head. bingo. You don’t need a bartender to travel with you. I just buy a bottle of Couvo, a bottle of orange juice, and a Grenadine,” Rozov recalls in 2016.

In some versions of the story, Rozov first served Mick Jagger a drink. In the others it was Keith Richards. Either way, bandmates loved it, drinking tequila, orange juice and grenadine drinks on tours, quickly popularizing the combination. Their 1972 tour became known as the Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise Tour, spreading drinks “around the world,” says Marine’s History Museum Plaque.

Previous versions of Tequila Sunrise are said to have been created in the 1930s or 1940s at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. It uses tequila, soda, lime juice and cremidecasis. However, Rozov and Rice used orange juice and grenadine to create today’s more ubiquitous tequila sunrise for the beach-like ombré effect.

“For many years, I had a great fortune to interview Rozov in many cases. He wasn’t particularly interested in his cocktail legacy, the opposite of how those things usually work,” however he said he had very much adored memories of working for the Trident.

“It was a fun time, but I had no regrets,” Rozov told Burkhart in 2012.

According to Trident, this was a recipe for Rozov’s Tequila Sunrise.

Part 1 of Jose Crubo Special Silver
2 parts of orange juice
1 cup of glenadine

From there, the recipe says, “Pouring tequila and orange juice into a glass on ice. Then slowly pour the grenadines. Enjoy in the way the Rolling Stones approve.”
