The Justice Department is suing New York City over sanctuary policies as the Trump administration continues to step up its deportation attacks and targets jurisdictions that refuse to work with immigration authorities.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in New York appoints New York City Mayor Eric Adams and several other city officials as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that the city enacted a policy with the intention of blocking the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration laws.

“New York City has been at Vanguard for a long time preventing the enforcement of the country’s immigration laws,” the lawsuit states. “Its history as a sanctuary city dates back to 1989, and efforts to block federal immigration enforcement have been intensifying ever since.”

The Justice Department cited New York’s policy that prohibits amendments to honor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees, requiring that federal immigration authorities be notified upon release of illegal immigrants from prison.

The New York Police Department was subject to similar provisions, the lawsuit states. In 2014, the city further resisted cooperation with ICE. This includes adding amendments to the Sanctuary City policy, except that immigrant detainees are not respected without a warrant issued by a Section 3 judge (or magistrate’s judge), and that the subject of the detainee has been convicted of a “violent or serious” crime within the past five years, or convicted in a match on a federal terrorist watch list.

Trump administration appeals to Los Angeles for sanctuary policies that “hinder” ice manipulation

The crime committed by illegal immigrants in the city has prompted several city leaders to seek cooperation with U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the lawsuit.

Attorney General Pam Bondy said the federal government has no choice but to protect New Yorkers.

“If New York leaders don’t step up to protect their citizens, we will,” she wrote to X.

US Rep. Nicole Mariatakis, RN.Y. praised the move, calling the sanctuary policy “mispointed” and “costs and risks.”

“Restoring public safety in our community begins with New York City working with ICE detainee requests, otherwise we will maintain dangerous offenders on our streets,” she writes to X.

The lawmaker said she has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request indicating that a further 16,000 crimes have been committed by thousands of people living in hotels and shelters at taxpayer’s expense.

Fox News Digital is in contact with Adams and the White House.

In June, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles over the Sanctuary policy. The city was caught up in a feud with the Trump administration over deportation attacks and anti-ice protests.
