Police arrested a man who was accused of shooting a driver who allegedly plunged into a crowd outside an East Hollywood nightclub last month, injuring dozens of people.
Fernando Ramirez, 29, of San Clemente, was dumped from a nightclub in Vermont Hollywood on July 19, and was reportedly returned to his car around 2am to plow the Nissan sedan into a crowd of street vendors and pedestrians. Atty. Nathan Hochman.
Ramirez was then pulled out of the car, punched and kicked by a bystander, authorities said.
Police said that when nightclub security guards tried to detain Ramirez, Lawndale resident Efren Villalobos, who approached from across the street and reportedly shot Ramirez in the waist once before fleeing, police said.
More than two weeks later, Villalobos was arrested. He was taken into custody by Redondo Beach Police Station officers on Sunday around 1:15pm, LA police said.
After the shooting, police released video surveillance images and physical descriptions of the shooter, and asked for the public’s help in identifying him. Police did not say whether the public hints led to Villarrobos’ arrest.

Villalobos was booked on charges of attempted murder and was in custody without bail, police said.
At least 36 people were injured in the incident, some of whom were trapped under the car until authorities arrived, Hochman said. Eight victims suffered “severe fractures, tears and fractures.”
According to Hochman, Ramirez faces life in prison if convicted of being charged.
