The Eaton Fire, one of many wildfires burning across the Los Angeles area, continued to burn uncontained Saturday, and the Santa Ana winds that fueled the blaze are expected to continue into next week.
As of 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Eaton Fire had burned 14,117 acres and was at 15% containment, an increase from the 3% containment rate reported Friday night.
The fire destroyed more than 7,000 buildings and claimed the lives of at least six people, including one man who died while defending his family’s home of 55 years, according to preliminary CalFire estimates.

A lull in the Santa Ana winds that have been spreading the fires in recent days has helped firefighters in rescue efforts, but officials and weather officials are now concerned about an increase in strong winds across the region. is being transferred.

“The fire is burning in an area with steep, complex terrain and extremely dry fuels,” CalFire said in its latest Eaton Fire status update released at 6:24 a.m. Saturday. “Despite these challenges, minimal fire spread was observed.” [on Friday]And priorities include maintaining current containment lines and subsequent border control. ”
“Nearly northeast winds are expected to return to higher elevations Saturday night into Sunday, with gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity below 20 percent,” the update said. “We could get some Santa Ana winds again around next Tuesday.”

The National Weather Service echoed similar sentiments, predicting “moderate to locally strong” winds in Santa Ana through at least Wednesday.
According to the NWS, severe fire weather conditions will continue.
“These winds, combined with dry air and dry vegetation, will continue to pose a fire weather threat for the region,” weather officials said. “Moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds will impact the typical Santa Ana wind corridor Saturday through Sunday and Monday through Wednesday.”

The Eaton Fire broke out Tuesday near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive in the Altadena area amid hurricane-force winds.

The Palisades Fire, the deadliest in Los Angeles history, began moving toward the populous San Fernando Valley Saturday morning, but the fire continues to burn.
Several other fires broke out across the Los Angeles area last week, including the Kenneth Fire, Hearst Fire, Sunset Fire, and Lydia Fire.
