(Hill) – The Energy Department believes that more than 40% of its staff is not essential. So these people could be on the chopping block.
The document viewed by Oka on Friday stated that 9,004 of the current personnel in 15,994 positions are essential. That means about 7,000 other positions are essential.
The total of approximately 16,000 positions listed by the agency include nearly 1,300 people currently on vacation, including roles related to diversity, equity and inclusion that the government has accepted the acquisition of “forks on the road” or that the government has sought to remove from the government.
It will not be immediately clear whether anyone will be deemed non-essential. A spokesman for the energy division said no final decision had been made as of Friday evening.
A spokesperson said the department is conducting an “organizational structure review to ensure operations are best positioned to achieve the DOE mission and align with the Trump administration’s priorities.”
“No final decisions have been made and multiple plans are still being considered,” the spokesman added.

The energy sector portfolio includes both energy technology and innovation, as well as nuclear weapons.
The announcement has tens of thousands of staff members being expelled from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Veterans Division as the Trump administration seeks to cut workers more widely.
However, these exiles included previous attempts to fire recent employment in the energy sector, with some staff being let go and later recalled. In Energy, this included staff who worked for nuclear safety agencies and electricity agencies.
The documents viewed by Hill list the agencies and offices that the energy sector considers to be essential. These include the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response, Environmental Health, Safety, Security, Environmental Management, Intelligence Agency, the Office of Intelligence Agency, the National Nuclear Security Agency, and the Power Department of Bonneville, Southeast, Southwest and Western Regions.
Some of the documents viewed by Hill do not list agents that are deemed unrequited.
