BOLDER, Colo. (AP) — Several people were injured and several people may have been burned at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, police said. Police said a man was detained in what the FBI quickly described as a “targeted terrorist attack” and was detained.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfern told reporters Sunday evening that it was too early to discuss the motives, but witnesses had been interviewed.
“It would be irresponsible to me to speculate on this early on about motivation,” he said.
The Boulder attack took place at a popular pedestrian mall known for attracting tourists and university students. On Sunday, a group of volunteers and protesters called Run for Thir’s Life came together to call for the release of remaining hostages in Gaza. The group has multiple chapters around the world where they meet regularly to defend hostage releases.
Sunday’s attack also came as U.S. law enforcement agencies tackle a surge in anti-Semitic violence. And last week, a man accused of fatal shootings of two Israeli embassy staff was arrested and cried out “Free Palestine” as he was being led by police.
Boulder police said there were “several casualties” in the attack. Redfearn said the injuries found by authorities are consistent with reports of individuals on fire, adding that the injuries range from serious to minors.
Several blocks in the pedestrian mall area were evacuated by police. Shortly after the attack, Sheen was nervous as law enforcement with police dogs walked down the street looking for threats and instructed the public to keep the pedestrian mall away.
“Our agents and local law enforcement are already on the ground, and we will share updates as more information becomes available,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media.
Colorado Gov. Jared Police said in a statement that he was “closely monitoring” the situation, adding that “all kinds of hatred acts are unacceptable.”
