The family of former U.S. Congressman Mia Love is focused on enjoying the time they left with her after her cancer stopped responding to treatment, Utah Republican daughter Abigare said Saturday.
“Hello, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. There are many people who know that mom is fighting GBM brain tumors,” Abigale wrote on her mother’s X account.
Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a brain tumor, in 2022, and revealed her diagnosis in August 2023.
“Sadly, her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing. We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying the rest of our time with her.”

Love became the first Black Republican woman to be elected to Congress when she won the Redrawn District near Salt Lake City in 2014, when she was represented by the Democrats. She was also a member of Utah’s first black legislature.
“I wasn’t elected in Saratoga Springs because of my race, gender, or heels,” Love said of her time as mayor of Utah City in 2013. “I was elected to the people there because I had a plan and a vision to stabilize us financially.”
The 49-year-old served two terms in Congress, worked on the Financial Services Committee, and she was the only Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus.
She was defeated by the Democrats in 2018.
Common cancer treatments can cause this painful side effect
Love last posted about her diagnosis in May, saying, “Though it hasn’t been easy in the last few years, I have found strength and comfort in my family in my faith, constant support and love.
Love told a group of church youths in 2023 that she was beginning to get worse when she went on holiday in 2022.
“As soon as we landed, we felt a headache coming,” she told the group. “When we went to the beach, my headaches got worse by reflecting the sun above the water. My husband took me to the hospital.”
The doctor discovered the tumor and she underwent surgery to remove 95% of it.

After it was revealed that the tumor was malignant, Ai began chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and ultimately immunotherapy.
A formerly converted from Catholic to the Church of Jesus Church of Latter-day Saints, Love told CNN last year that she was “looking for a cure for my faith and science.”
The late Senator John McCain was also diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2017. He passed away in 2018.
Despite her diagnosis, Love continued to be politically involved in the final election cycle, denounced an attempted assassination with President Trump in July at X.
“Political violence is mean,” she wrote. “In our Republic there is no place for it. And if you find yourself supporting or wishing violence, know that you are wrong. Please encourage politeness, rational discourse, and proper civic engagement rather than anger or hatred.”

A week later she said, “After this week, I’m all on Team Trump/Vance! They have a passionate vision of the American revival that will allow all Americans to pursue their dreams.”
After the announcement of her daughter on Saturday, Love received a pour of support.
“Meer Love is a dear friend. I pray for her and her family,” Utah Sen. Mike Lee posted on X.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, “Mia Love serves Utah in sincerity and her strength and grace continue to inspire us. Our hearts are with Mia and her family during this difficult time.
“Sorry,” wrote former Republican MP Adam Kintzinger, a former colleague of Love.
