The first-ever tornado warning was issued for San Francisco County early Saturday as thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 90 mph battered the area, officials said.
“Immediately seek shelter in a basement or on the lowest floor of a sturdy building,” the National Weather Service warned on social media. Parts of San Mateo County were also placed under the warning.
More than 1 million people were under a brief warning, which was lifted at 5:51 a.m. and lifted by 6:15 a.m., said National Weather Service Bay Area meteorologist Lamont Bain.
This advisory is the first time the agency has issued a tornado warning for San Francisco County. The last time a tornado warning was issued for San Mateo County was March 18, 2011.
“It’s certainly unusual. When it comes to tornadoes, we don’t always have the ingredients,” Bain said.
In addition to moisture, “you need a combination of lift, you need some instability, you need some wind shear. We saw all of these things coming together in a short period of time this morning.” ”
He said tornado warnings are “a good reminder that people always have multiple ways to receive weather and warning information.” This includes signing up for text alerts, checking news reports, tuning in to weather radio, and more.
San Francisco is expected to see rain all day and wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph until at least noon. The rain is expected to end tonight, with dry conditions expected by Sunday, before returning to rain on Monday.
