Construction has begun on the first indoor roller coaster at Legoland California’s latest ride, the theme park.
The roller coaster is taking on part of Merlin Entertainment, the parent company of the $90 million expansion project Legoland, to bring attractions to “New Heights” in Southern California and Florida Resorts, according to a groundbreaking announcement Tuesday.
For LEGOLAND CA, a new roller coaster will be the first to be built at the theme park in nearly 20 years. The last roller coaster added to Carlsbad Park was the coaster Auros, which opened in 2004 on Dino Island. It is now known as Dino Valley.

New attractions in both California and Florida theme parks are expected to be released sometime in 2026, but no exact dates have been released.
“As we prepare to unveil this exciting new attraction, designed, co-created and imagined by the incredible creative team of LEGO Group and the unparalleled talent of the Merlin Magic Maker, we hope that the mystery and expectations will add to the great thrills ahead.”
Merlin Entertainment did not reveal details about the new roller coaster in its announcement, but last year the company submitted plans to the Carlsbad Planning Commission to introduce a new 2.38 acres of land within the park known as the “LEGO Galaxy.”
The cornerstone of the proposed land, featuring an intergalactic theme similar to Disneyland’s “Tomorrowland,” was an indoor roller coaster located within the 44-foot-high, 32,000-square-foot LEGO-themed “Spaceport.”

“This is not just a ride, it’s going to be an exploration unlike anything else,” Kurtstocks, the resort president at Legoland California, said of the roller coaster. “We are not under-cost to deliver the most innovative, interactive and fascinating experience possible.”
For the project, Merlin Entertainment required planning committee permission to raise the building height from the existing up to 35 feet to 45 feet.

According to a proposal submitted to the committee, the new “LEGO Galaxy” land will also feature space-themed lift and spin-style small rides similar to Sea World San Diego’s Liptido Rescue, retail options, children’s play area and other interactive attractions.
To make way for new land, LEGOLAND CA has notified the committee that its longtime “driving school” and “junior driving school” will be moved to the area currently occupied by the “fun town police” and “fire academy” attractions.
The driving school attraction was temporarily closed late last year in preparation for the move. At the time, the theme park said the two would reopen at a new location someday in 2025.
