One former employee at California State University Long Beach has been accused of stealing about $36,560 from the school’s athletics department, officials announced Monday.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the two employees worked together to submit fraudulent timesheets to CSULB, demonstrating hundreds of hours of nonexistent work in 2022.
The DA charged both Oscar Perez Almanza, 39, and 38-year-old Hender Noe Maxwell, with a felony of conspiracy to commit grand larceny and counting one deadly crime.
“It is further argued that crime demonstrates planning, refinement and professionalism, the DA’s office said in a news release.
Both employees pleaded not guilty to their arrest Monday.
According to the DA’s office, throughout the 2022 calendar year, Almanza worked as a field supervisor, while Maxwell was a former ground worker in the university’s athletics club.
Maxwell was not employed at the school, but authorities allegedly submitted a timesheet that falsely proved hundreds of hours of work.
According to the report, Armanza later approved Maxwell’s timesheet, but he knew he no longer works for CSULB.
The two are said to have since split the stolen money, totaling $36,560.
“The court recognized and released the defendant on its own condition on the condition that he waived his passport,” the official said.
They will return to court on April 14th. If convicted as a charge, the defendant could be up to three years in the county jail.
